If you have not determination in your heart,
if you have not the patience of an angel, if, no matter how far
the freaks of fortune have placed you from your goal, you are
not prepared to find the way to your infinite, as turtles,
wherever they may be, will make their way back to the ocean,
you may as well give up at once.
Honoré de Balzac, Lost Illusions
I just completed today's crossword puzzle in the NY Times. I've been craving it since someone was talking up Clinton's intelligence to me lately and claimed that he listened to his briefings each morning while solving it, and still had everyone's details down like the back of his hand. I love how successful intellectual pursuits drive you to pursue more wily games for your brain. Of course that works for most kinds of pursuits, and is why it is so spreading me thin that I'm interested in too much. Can you continue to yearn for breadth while being shoved into the depths of grad school? Follow our herione in the coming year to see!
