about to leave the office to pick my mom up from the airport!
I was talking to some people today (some from less tech-oriented backgrounds than I usually discuss this topic with, I imagine) about various privacy issues online, and one thing that struck me as particularly strange was that people pay enough attention to their spam to attempt to garner meaning from it. That is, "I just gave my information to company A yesterday, I have 3 new varieties of spam today, I wonder if there is a connection, I am now wary about these company A hooligans."
This absolutely bewildered me. I sometimes will notice if there is a wave of spam that's allowing one or two pieces into my inbox that got past the filters, but by and large, I imagine I get hundreds a day, and the waves pass right over me. Am I part of the problem? Do I give out my email address too often, or keep the forwarding of my old email addresses for too long? It's not really an inconvenience, as I very very rarely have real mail go to spam (my own mail going to other people's spam, that's another story-- I run with some sketchy email servers, what can I say-- and by sketchy, I mean cooler than yours), and deleting the one piece that has no links and looks just like a poem? It's not all that computationally intensive.
please to note! atlanta-residents and surrounds! I'm going to visit on the weekend of July 13-15, and there will be a Star Bar appearance by none other than the widely-acclaimed (by me) Wydelles on Saturday night the 14th. I may have presents for the birthday kids of the hour, and I hope to orchestrate some kind of pre-show eating event? Perhaps, if people would be willing?
love,
